Autumn in South Tyrol

This is the period when the Italian holiday region South Tyrol shows its best side. Leafs on the tree turn red, orange and yellow, temperatures are mild and pleasant and the panoramic view is simply overwhelming.
This is why autumn is said to be the most beautiful time of the year for hikings and excursions through the South Tyrolean landscape. Start your hiking experience here.
Make sure you don't miss the "Leiferer Höhenweg", which will take you to Seit. Even the way up to the nice village od Nove Ponente is always worth a visit. Hikers will enjoy many different Panoramic views on the whole Val d'Adige.
Also the pilgrim's way to "Madonna di Pietralba", the most important and mostly visited place of pilgrimage in Alto Adige.

Autumn excursions in South Tyrol

Autumn in South Tyrol is one of the most beautiful seasons in order to discover the region by feet. The yellow, orange and red colour of the leaves, form a wonderful setting for all your hikes and excursions.

The climate is still mild and there are many hikes to enjoy, such as the Natural Park of the Trudner Horn, the various excursions to the Dolomites, the Leiferer Höhenweg and the excursion to the nice mountain village Deutschnofen.

During your hikes, you will have the possibility to enjoy the breathtaking view of our mountains. Don't miss the famous pilgrim's route to Madonna di Pietralba - Maria Weißenstein; starting point in Laives.

Castelfeder in Ora

Hike to Castelfeder - In autumn, the yellow oak leaves and the blue sky form the perfect setting to enjoy this wonderful excursion to the hill of Castelfeder.
Only 20 minutes from the biotope of Castelfeder, you will reach the ruins of an ancient Roman building, where you can visit the rests of the old wall and the chapel of Barbara (6th century) and discover the wonderful view.
In the south, you will see the Adige river, on the left side the town of Egna and on the right side the wine village Termeno.

Grape and fruit harvest in South Tyrol

During this period, framers reap the fruits of their hard work.
The South Tyrolean Wine Road is one of the most important wine production locations of the whole region, and this is particularly shown by the patient treatment of vineyards. Depending on the maturity, the grapes are finally harvested between September and October. Once they arrive to the wine cellars, they are pressed and stored in large barrels.

The Southern part of the region (Upper and Lower Adige river and Bolzano), also offer a rich assortment of fruits, such as apples, plums, kaki, pears, cherries and figs, which are harvested in autumn as well.

Wine tasting in South Tyrol

To produce fine wines you need the perfect combination between excellent locations, mineral - rich soils and a long wine-making tradition. 
Red wines, as the Blauburgunder, the Merlot, the Cabernet, the Kalterer and the Vernatsch, but also white wines as the Gewürztraminer, the Weißburgunger and the Ruländer, are just some of the excellent wines of the South Tyrolean production.

An old tradition: Törggelen in South Tyrol

From October to November

By the middle of october, when the days are shorter and the leaves are colourful, it is time for traditions: time for Törggelen.
It is the most famous South Tyrolean tradition: new wine, Speck and mountain cheese, roasted chestnuts, home-made Mohnkrapfen (Krapfen with poppy seeds filling) and many other specialities that you can taste in our Hotel Steinmannwald.

"Törggelen" comes from the Latin word “torquere”, which means “press wine". It is an old tradition, that was celebrated after the wine pressing; all employees used to eat together and to taste the new wine. The traditional dishes at that time, where cabbage, Knödel and smoked meat, sausages, speck, Kaminwurzen and cheese. For dessert, they ate Krapfen and, of cours, roasted chestnuts with butter.

The traditional Almabtrieb

The Almabtrieb is an annual event, where cow, sheep and horse herds are led back to their stables down in the valley.
Cows wear some wreaths made with pine leaves, which are decorated with slogans and embroideries and there is usually a big show of folk music and folk dances. Tourists will have the possibility to taste some nice South Tyrolean dishes.
Worth to see: the “Schofschoad” in Val Senales, the return of the Haflinger horses in Renon and the Almabtrieb in S. Gertrude/Val d'Ultimo. Don't miss it!

Traditional Markets in South Tyrol

There are several huge markets in South Tyrol, which take place every year again. One of these is the market of Val d’Ultimo, which takes place September 22nd. A rich variety of products are offered on this market, as sheep products, clothing and much more. Another attraction is the sheep shearing. For the population of the Val d’Ultimo this day is a real festive day and everyone celebrates!

There is also the Krämermarkt which takes place in Brunico between October 26th and October 28th.
While each year on - November 2nd - there is the traditional Soul's market "Sealamorkt" in Glurns, the smallest town in Europe.

Relaxation for body and soul!

Famous German writers as Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Kafka, as well as the Empress Sissi, used to visit this famous city and to enjoy its thermal baths. Also nowadays, the modern design of the structure surrounded by a 50.000 m² park and its relaxing atmosphere, attract every year many tourists. South Tyrol is the perfect place also for all culture lovers. Nearby, you will find some nice museums and exhibitions; the right combination between art and science.
Visit the famous Touriseum, the Messner Mountain Museum and the South Tyrolean Museum for Archaeology, where you will find the well - known mummy of Ötzi - the Iceman.
Worth to see are also the Animal Museum, the South Tyrolean Museum of Nature, the Museion, the Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor, the Typewriter-museum and the South Tyrolean Wine Museum!
